Pu kava

Double-Sided Lozenge Family

In August 2005, I collected the following string figure algorithm known as "Pu kava" (big shell) on Ua Pou, Marquesas Islands.
The same procedure was known
as "Wahine" (Butterfly) by Maori people (New-Zealand): see [Andersen J.C. 1917, p.242].

Heart-sequence   -   Nomenclature

Step 1
Opening A

Step 2
Pass 2 proximal to 5 loop, then pick up both 5n and 5f and return.

Step 3
Proximally, insert 2 into 1 loop. Pick up 1f and return.

Step 4
Release 1.

Step 5
Proximally, insert 1 into proximal 2 loops...

...
... and seize distal 2f between 1 and 2.
Step 6
Rotating seized 1 and 2 away from you,
insert them from above into lower 2 loops...

...
... then return to position while rotating both hands, palms towards you.
Let radial 2 strings slip off.

...
Release 1 while continuing to rotate 2.
And turn plams so that they face each other. Extend

Final figure of Pu Kava

You have Pu kava.
